Wilson (c.1788–1858), a clerk, and his wife, Margaret Oliphant (c.1789–1854), she was born atWallyford, near Musselburgh, East Lothian, and spent her childhood at Lasswade (near Dalkeith), Glasgow and Liverpool. As a girl, she constantly experimented with writing. In 1849 she had her first novel published: Passages in the Life of Mrs. Margaret Maitland. This dealt with the Scottish Free Church movement, with which Mr. and Mrs. Wilson both sympathised, and met with some success. It was followed by Caleb Field in 1851, the year in which she met the publisher William Blackwood in Edinburgh and was invited to contribute to the famous Blackwood's Magazine. [more][Less]

Alfred Ollivant (1874–1927) was an English novelist known best for his novel Owd Bob. Ollivant also published about a dozen other novels ranging from small-scale cautionary tales to grand historical stories.Alfred Ollivant was born in Nuthurst, Sussex, during 1874 and became an author after a horse-riding injury ending his brief military career. Owd Bob, his first novel, was published during 1898. Set in rural Cumbria, in northern England, the novel concerns a suspected sheepkilling collie Bob. Even though most of the book's dialogue is written in the Cumbrian dialect, it became popular in the United States. Ollivant even published a sequel, Danny, during 1902. He was also a short story contributor to the magazines The Atlantic Monthly and the Boston Evening Transcript. Alfred Ollivant died in London on January 19, 1927. [more][Less]
